Turning Twenty Onnneeee

I’ve been asked many many many many times if i’m having a party to commemorate my 21st. This is quite intriguing for i’ve never been asked that many times before when previous birthdays were approaching. It seems as if 21 is like some magical or extra special age that must be celebrated…makes you wonder why huh?

And because melisa loh is quite free now, she has come up with reasons why the number 21 is that special.

#1) Society sees this as a marker of a “coming-of-age“. Now you aren’t a youth or young adult any longer, you are a full-fledged ADULT who just happens to be young (notice how the arrangement of words make a world of difference).  You are deemed to have crossed that line between dependence and independence. Now that’s something. The government allows you to vote now and you’ve suddenly caught the interest of many credit-card companies. That’s worth celebrating.

#2) Officially into the twenty-somethings, this period of time would be with the most transitions. Chances are, you would be leaving the sheltered academic life for the unknown “real” world of business and mean people. You would also begin realising that your biological clock is ticking away furiously and you begin seriously looking for a life partner (no more hanky panky puppy infatuation). Then you might also consider marriage, so yeap, lotsa life changes.

#3) Because there’s a movie coming up named after that number. I know of only 2 other movies with numerical titles: 15 and 300. But why aren’t those ages as popular? Let me suggest that being 15 isn’t as popular as many don’t particularly like teenagers…i guess it relates to moral panics. Moreover, most 15 year olds in Singapore are busy preparing for their O’levels..don’t think they’ve the time to have a big celebration anyway. Need i mention 300?? Who lives to 300 nowadays anyway?!

#4) By the time you are 21, it’s likely that you would have made quite a number of friends. It’s about time to call for a gathering anyway. After all, if you’re facing that many changes in life, some friends may be “left behind” or go missing :) And it’s not nice to leave people behind. So this is like some form of consolation or a last-goodbye of sorts (that’s a song!)

#5) Humans just enjoy celebrating. And 21 is like a good time for you aren’t that old to be too tired and busy to celebrate, yet you aren’t too young to lack the required financial capital which comes with  celebrations.

#6) You’re almost about a quarter through with life. Better celebrate now before it’s too late?

Okie! That’s all my ‘holiday-ing’ brain can come up with. If you’ve any more reasons, do drop a comment :)
